Independent service in 1947 airmen continued to wear uniforms nearly identical to the U.S. They are intended for use in office environments, in positions that interact with the public, and in watch situations. All sailors are authorized to wear the "Eisenhower" jacket with short-sleeved service uniforms with appropriate rank devices on the shoulder boards. Full Dress Blue Uniforms are worn for several formal occasions, including participation in a Change of Command ceremony, official visits with honors (per Navy Regulations), visits of ceremony to Foreign Men-of-War and Foreign Officials, and occasions of State, Ceremonies, and Solemnities. The rarely seen Tropical White Uniform (also referred to as Tropical White Short) was similar to the Summer White Service uniform, except white knee shorts and knee socks were worn. This uniform is informally called "chokers" due to the standing collar. All men wore ties, females necktabs, with an optional silver clip for Petty Officers First Class and below, others a gold clip. Officers wear shoulder boards with this uniform, while chiefs wear metal collar insignia. It was intended to provide a more practical alternative to the Service Dress Whites and a more formal alternative to the Service Khakis. They are seasonal, with the white uniform worn in summer and the blue in winter.
